British pop icon Elton John has revealed that his hit song Crocodile Rock was originally written as a joke. Appearing on the podcast of English footballer Troy Deeney last month, Elton was asked if there is a song that he cannot seem to get away from. Nonetheless, Elton promised that the conclusion of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in will mark the last time he will ever sing Crocodile Rock.

But that era ends. And the crocodile rock becomes lost to the mists of nostalgia. You can practically hear the dancing quotation marks, especially on the pinched falsetto that John uses on the chorus. In going big and demonstrative and knowingly silly, Elton John wrote a song that sounded like a playground taunt.
